Chosen for its blend of horror with sci-fi, The Whisperer in Darkness sits close to The Dunwich Horror and The Nameless City on the top of my Lovecraftian pile of books. The one that is thrown on the floor behind the shelf.

The abundance of Lovecraftian presence in the mass culture, in cooperative games especially, requires at least some familiarity with the source material. Which, I must say, comes with a certain amount of effort. Of course, the style and atmosphere in the Horror Maestro books is on significant level. However, for me it's mostly style. Neither horror nor action pace are there, as well as almost no tricks to keep me really hooked up... Reading Lovecraft is like a homework essay I have to submit to proceed with the class but reeeally don't wanna write.

Luckily, consuming the dissection of Mythos on YouTube saves a lot of that effort. Watching them being incorporated into the fictional universes of other authors can be interesting (and actually more rewarding). But when asked which of the original novels by Lovecraft is my favorite - I'll randomly name one of those three. Whatever, let's just roll up that raid on Arkham gates once more!
