I once failed to read "the Algebraist" by Iain Banks, but was advised to reconsider and take his "Culture #1" book. Indeed, this digests better. A spacefaring adventure in a sick but catchy setting. Refreshing. Both distracting from the real life moment and somewhat reminding of it: the plot spins around a war conflict both cruel and pointless.
